The American Red Cross, working in
partnership with the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, educates people on how
to stop the transmission of HIV, encourages
people to respond in informed ways to people
who have HIV, and helps people apply the facts
about HIV to their own behavior. These goals
are accomplished through our educational
programs. Locally, the Wyoming Valley Chapter
has a grant from the PA Department of Health
to provide HIV/AIDS education and outreach in a six county
area in Northeastern PA.
A Counseling and Testing Center recently
opened at our new building. HIV testing is
provided free of charge under the direction of
the PA Department of Health. The test is bound
by law to be completely confidential, and a
client can ask to test anonymously as well.
The HIV Department will be available for
walk-in testing from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM,
appointments for evenings and weekends are
available by calling Theresa Tyler-Smith at
(570) 823-7161 ext. 346 or Scott Preisel at
ext. 367.
