Whether you have a defined duty to act in
emergencies, or are a member of the community who
wants to know how to help in an emergency, the Wyoming
Valley Chapter has a course for you!
All the following courses are taught at the
Chapter (256 N. Sherman Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA) and take place between 6:00-10:00 p.m.
unless otherwise noted. Course fees include all
materials, including textbooks. Class fees are
non-refundable. Advance registration and payment are
required, as class size is limited (filled on a
first-come, first served basis). If you need to
register for a class immediately, your best choice is
to pay on-line to reserve your space. Schedule subject to
change.

CPR/AED
- Content:
Combining lecture, video and hands-on manikin
training, this course teaches participants to call and
work with EMS, care for conscious and unconscious
choking victims, perform rescue breathing and CPR, and
use an AED safely when CPR is in progress. One 4-hour session- Certificate valid for 1 year.

Content: Designed
for anyone who cares for children. Combines video,
hands-on practice and discussion. Recognize and care

FIRST AID
-Content: Lectures,
interactive video demonstrations, discussions and
hands-on training teach participants how to recognize
emergency situations, check the scene and call for help
and avoid blood borne pathogen exposure, care for
wounds, bone and soft tissue injuries, head and spinal
injuries, burns, and heat and cold emergencies and
manage sudden illness, stroke, seizures, bites and
poisoning. One 3 1/2-hour session- Certificate valid for 3
years.

CPR FOR THE
PROFESSIONAL RESCUER/AED
- For the Health
Care Provider. Content:
Recognizing and responding to breathing and cardiac
emergencies; two rescuer CPR; use of resuscitation and
bag-valve masks. This course is designed for people
with the duty to respond in an emergency. 8 hours. Certificate valid for 1
year.

BABYSITTING
TRAINING
- Participants learn
how to interview for a babysitting job, make responsible
decisions, supervise children, keep kids and yourself
safe, choose safe and age-appropriate toys. Skills taught
include: rescue breathing, first aid for choking, first
aid for bleeding, and basic care (diapering, holding,
feeding, dressing) for infants and small children. Two- 4 hour sessions-Certificate in Babysitter's Training (no
expiration).

PET FIRST AID
- This
course will teach you the information you need to keep your
pet safe and to act with confidence during an emergency.
Subjects covered in the course include proper emergency
procedures, identifying problems requiring immediate
attention, and how to keep your pet healthy. The emphasis is
on dogs and cats. The course fee includes a Pet First Aid
book that contains detailed information about how to respond
to a wide range of pet emergencies. One 3.5 hour
session.

LIFEGUARD
- If you are 15 or
older and looking for a great summer job or challenging
career that's in demand, American Red Cross Lifeguard
Training is the best place to start. Successful course
completion requires full participation in classroom and
skill sessions, as well as successful performance in
skill and knowledge evaluations. You will learn rescue
skills for use on water and land, first aid and
professional rescuer CPR/AED training, professional
lifeguard responsibilities, and surveillance skills to
help you recognize and prevent injuries. Eleven 3-hour
sessions.

Oct. 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 28 and Nov. 3

LIFEGUARD

lifeguard responsibilities, and surveillance skills to
help you recognize and prevent injuries. One 4-hour

PARENT
and CHILD AQUATICS
- Developed for
children 6 months to 5 years of age, American Red Cross
Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by
emphasizing fun in the water. Successful
course completion requires full participation in
classroom and skill sessions, as well as successful
performance in skill and knowledge evaluations. Parents
and children participate in several guided practice
sessions that help children learn elementary skills,
including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking,
back floating, underwater exploration and more. Once
children can perform basic skills without parental
assistance, they may begin Learn-to-Swim courses. Five
1-hour sessions.

LEARN-to-SWIM- Our Learn-to-Swim
courses offer something for everybody. A unique
four-level instructional approach. A variety of strokes
will be covered including the front crawl, back crawl,
elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and
butterfly. An introduction to a wide range of personal
safety skills and diving techniques will be covered.
More advanced-level students refine their skills, learn
the basics of springboard diving and discover how to
incorporate swimming into a lifelong fitness program.
The student will be evaluated on his swimming ability
and will be placed in the appropriate Swim Level.
Level I, Level II- 1:00-2:00pm: Introduction to Water
Level II, Level IV, Level V- 2:00-3:00pm: Fundamentals
Level VI- 3:00-4:00pm: Lifeguard Readiness

HIV/AIDS PREVENTION
INSTRUCTOR COURSE
- Is designed to
prepare instructors to encourage people to respond in
informed ways to the risk of HIV infection as well to
people who have HIV, share facts about HIV and AIDS
accurately in a non-judgementally and sensitive way,
discuss facts related to sensitive issues and encourage
people to apply the facts about HIV/AIDS to their own
behavior.
